Paddy Kingsland reminisces about the process for the score:

We decided early on that the music should have a period flavour together with the usual high tech (at the time!) synthesiser sounds. Peter was my favourite Doctor Who director and was always enormously encouraging and positive... he generously gave me the freedom to do my own thing, but always knew if something needed to be adjusted. I had about a week to put together the music for an episode before going to the dub… the score is quite sombre although there are elements of “yea verily” type music to set some scenes, which have a lighter texture. I played all the parts, using the synthesisers of the day, Oberheim, Roland and ARP, adding bass guitar plus drums and cymbals… not to mention my trusty Fender Mustang guitar.

Both CDs are due to be released on 1st May 2020.

Silva Screen Records have announced a two-volume release of Segun Akinola's score for the latest series of Doctor Who, due out on 3rd April 2020 both digitally and on CD.

The composer said:

From the experimental sounds of ‘Orphan 55’ to the emotional rollercoaster of ‘The Timeless Children’, it’s been a complete joy working on the music for Series 12 and I hope that whilst listening to this album, fans can relive all their favourite moments.

DR Publications have released a homage to Delia Derbyshire composed by Roger Reynolds in celebration of Delia Derbyshire Day, which took place on Doctor Who's anniversary.

Roger says of his work:

I have always thought that Delia Derbyshire never received the recognition due to her for that amazing Doctor Who Theme. And so I decided to concoct a musical piece, as an “Homage” to her, something embodying that enigmatic theme but using today’s digital technology.

I had been working on the “Homage to Delia Derbyshire” for quite a while, without knowing that 23rd November was “Delia Derbyshire Day.

That the final version of my Homage was ready, i.e. completed slightly ahead of time, and just happened to coincide with this specific date is, well, absolute serendipity.

As are my compositional preferences, the piece is, at times, multi-layered using concurrent fragments of the theme played against each other using different instrumentation.

It’s best heard (I think) turned up loud with the sound just washing over you.

The composition comes in two versions, one for headphones and one for speakers: both can be listened to via the DR Productions website.

The 1968 album BBC Radiophonic Music is to re-released in March on digital and vinyl by Silva Screen.

The album was the tenth released by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and featured electronic works by composers John Baker, David Cain and Delia Derbyshire.

Widely regarded as a major influence on the development of electronic music worldwide, BBC Radiophonic Music is a compilation of short works, often composed as intros to various radio or television programs. Conceived in a time when analogue sampling meant hours of slicing tape with razor blades, BBC Radiophonic Music is brimming with zippy themes, unsettling atmospherics, riffs, loops, clicks and beeps. Insanely catchy yet deeply sinister, this is ‘collage music’, produced, according to Desmond Briscoe of BBC Radiophonic Workshop,"with the intention of entertaining rather than informing".

This is an essential album for analogue and TV theme obsessives, and anyone with an interest in contemporary electronica; mysterious, eccentric and celestial, it is a celebration of one of the UK's most treasured and unique institutions.

Silva Screen Records have announced they will be releasing the Doctor Who Series 11 Soundtrack in January 2019

The music from the series, composed by Segun Akinola, will be available on CD and on streaming services from 11 January.

The recently completed Series 11 marked the arrival of the Thirteenth Doctor, award-winning actress Jodie Whittaker.

Segun Akinola is a multi-talented composer whose work includes scoring BBC Two’s landmark four-part series Black and British: A Forgotten History, written and presented by Historian David Olusoga. He also scored Shola Amoo’s debut feature film A Moving Image, which had its world premiere at the 2016 LA Film Festival.

Where do I even begin?! Working on series 11 has been nothing short of the experience of a lifetime. I have loved every single minute of it. From working closely with the production team, to writing the character themes to recording the New Year Special, it’s truly been so much fun.

The BBC has confirmed that Series Eleven of Doctor Who will be scored by composer Segun Akinola.

Segun Akinola, who trained at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, will take over from Murray Gold, supplying the incidental music for the series as well as providing a fresh take on the legendary theme tune.

As part of the BAFTA Breakthrough Brit program in 2017, Segun has already been recognised as one of the rising stars among British composers.

Segun’s other work includes scoring BBC Two’s landmark four-part series Black and British: A Forgotten History, written and presented by Historian David Olusoga. He also scored Shola Amoo’s debut feature film A Moving Image, which had its world premiere at the 2016 LA Film Festival, won the Special Recognition in Narrative Directing award at BlackStar Film Festival 2016 and had its European premiere at the 60th BFI London Film Festival in 2016. His score for Dear Mr Shakespeare received an Honourable Mention for the 2017 BSO Jerry Goldsmith Award for ‘Best Original Score for a Short Film’. Recently, he completed the scores for the major three-part series The Human Body: Secrets of Your Life Revealed and two-part series Expedition Volcano, both for BBC Two and PBS.

Silva Screen will release the soundtrack to Series 9 of Doctor Who on 27th April 2018

Premiering in September 2015, the ninth series of Doctor Who featured Peter Capaldi in the title role in his second season. This four-part collection features general cues on discs one and two, the complete score from the episode Heaven Sent on disc three and on disc four the Christmas Special, The Husbands Of River Song.

Five-time BAFTA nominee Murray Gold recently confirmed that he is stepping down from composer duties on the show after 12 years of providing some of the finest music to be heard on contemporary television.

It’s one of the last great morality tales out there but it also celebrates life. For that reason I think it’s a great show for kids. I couldn’t write this much music for it if I didn’t feel that way.

Underlining the breadth of Gold’s composing skill across over 149 minutes of music, this album is also the 12th Silva Screen release of his music since the 2005 Doctor Who revival.

Silva Screen Records has announced the the soundtrack release of Murray Gold's music from Doctor Who Series 9 will be released early in 2018

The long-awaited release will be a 4 disc set.

Disc 1 will contain cues from The Magician's Apprentice, The Witch's Familiar, Under The Lake, Before The Flood, The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived

Disc 2 will contain cues from The Zygon Invasion, The Zygon Inversion, Sleep No More, Face The Raven and Hell Bent.

Disc 3 will contain the score from the Series standout episode - Heaven Sent

Disc 4 will contain the score to the 2015 Christmas Special - The Husbands Of River Song

As with the Series 8 release, the first run of CDs will contain an additional booklet collecting Stuart Manning's retro poster designs for each episode.

A blue plaque has been unveiled at the childhood home of the woman who realized the original Doctor Who theme music, Delia Derbyshire.

The mark of respect is one of 47 Blue Plaques unveiled as part of BBC Music Day, to commemorate people or places that have influenced the UK’s musical landscape. Those honored include singers, musicians, songwriters, producers, and broadcasters, as well as significant locations that played a major role in the UK's musical heritage.

People commemorated include John Peel and David Bowie, while places getting a plaque include the Brighton venue where Abba won the Eurovision Song Contest.

The final list was selected from BBC Local Radio listeners’ suggestions, as well as those of a committee including music industry experts and BBC representatives.

David Holdsworth, Controller of BBC English Regions, said:

It is hugely prestigious to receive a British Plaque Trust Blue Plaque, as usually only around two are awarded each year. To mark BBC Music Day across BBC Local Radio with 47 blue plaques is a fitting way to commemorate our listeners’ passion and pride for where they live and to celebrate our musical heritage.

The plaque honouring Delia Derbyshire was unveiled by Sixth Doctor Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant who played Peri, who joined BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's Vic Minett to officially perform the ceremony.

A project to mark the 80th Anniversary year of Doctor Who legend and Electronic Music pioneer Delia Derbyshire, has won support from The Heritage Lottery Fund.

Delia Derbyshire Day has been awarded £42,600 ($53,000) to help organise a programme of activities and events to celebrate 80 years since the birth of the woman who realised the original Doctor Who Theme music, composed by Ron Grainer.

Silva Screen have announced that the 1983 album The Soundhouse, featuring music by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, will be re-released on CD on 7th October with a vinyl pressing to follow on 4th November:

SILVA SCREEN RECORDS PRESENTS THE SOUNDHOUSE

This historic 1983 BBC Radiophonic compilation reflects the advances made in computer technology and electronic music.

In 1979 the Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument) was launched, the year that the BBC Radiophonic Workshop celebrated its 21st birthday. At the price of a house (approx £30,000) this state of the art piece of equipment was embedded with an 8 bit digital sampling synthesizer capable of emulating acoustic instruments and orchestras alongside the manipulation of sound effects. For the BBC Radiophonic Workshop this was a major change, as previously composers would spend weeks editing small pieces of tape together to create sounds. Ingenuity and creativity in music and sound was still at the forefront for Workshop members but suddenly made a whole lot easier. This 1983 collection (a first time re-release here of the complete album) celebrated these new found freedoms most notably on the opening track where five Radiophonic composers combined to add their own musical identity to a rhythmic percussive sequence from the Fairlight. Highlights include music from the radio production of The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy and Fancy Fish based on Saint-Saen's Carnival Of The Animals which was the first BRW project to utilise the Fairlight.

Silva Screen have re-released the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's 21st anniversary album on CD:

In 1958 the BBC Radiophonic Workshop opened with the aim to enhance in the main, drama output on the Third Programme (now Radio 3) following the development of new electronic music techniques emanating from Europe. Their work expanded across the BBC to take in TV drama (especially sci-fi), schools programmes and themes. The latter being their most celebrated and well known work, Delia Derbyshire's treatment of Ron Grainer's theme for Doctor Who. This collection, originally released by BBC Records in 1979 to celebrate 21 years of the workshop appears for the first time in its full original form on CD. The two Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular shows set for New York have been cancelled. The shows were scheduled for 7 October 2015 at Barclays Center in New York and were to be hosted by Michelle Gomez.

An email was sent to ticket holders with the following message:

Vision Nine regrets to announce that the two Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular shows scheduled for October 7 at Barclays Center have been cancelled.

All Ticketmaster online and phone orders will automatically be refunded. Remaining refunds will be available at point of purchase.

We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to see you at a future event at Barclays Center.

A message on the Barclays Center website states: "there are no plans to reschedule them at this time."

The UK run of the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular opened in London this afternoon, and images from the performance are now available. The Spectacular continues in London tomorrow, heading to Cardiff on Monday, Birmingham on Tuesday, Leeds on Wednesday, Newcastle on Thursday, and finishing in Glasgow on Friday.

With Wembley being declared safe the BBC Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular is all set to begin its first UK tour, this weekend.

The London venue had been closed for the past two days, following the discovery of a World War II unexploded bomb on a building site nearby. The bomb, which posed "a genuine risk to life", was removed by members of the British Army's Royal Logistic Corps disposal team, early this afternoon, and will be detonated in a controlled explosion.

The area has now been reopened.

The Symphonic Spectacular features the music written for Doctor Who by Murray Gold, performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Chorus of Wales. The orchestra will be conducted by Ben Foster and hosted by Peter Davison.

The show will enjoy a limited run of thirteen performances in London, Cardiff, Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle and Glasgow.

The BBC have confirmed that the weekend launch of the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular, due to be held at the SSE Arena in Wembley, is expected to go ahead, despite the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb in the area.

An unexploded device has been found in Wembley, on a building site close to The SSE Arena.

Police are currently on site and work is underway to make the area safe.

The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular shows planned for Saturday and Sunday are currently unaffected. We will update if there is further news.

The area around the SSE arena is currently closed by the police, with Army bomb disposal experts currently trying to defuse the 50 Kg explosive, thought to have been dropped by German bombers in the early 1940's.

The SSE arena has advised people to follow Brent Borough Metropolitan Police Service for updates.

The concert is due to play three shows at Wembley this weekend, before heading around the UK with dates at Cardiff, Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Today sees the release of a new digital mini-album by composer Dominic Glynn. The Ravolox Remixes presents three remixes based upon music he originally created for Doctor Who in the 1980s, plus a new remix of his own Doctor Who theme variation from 1990.

Commenting on Facebook, the composer said:

(The Trial Theme) is the music from the opening scene of The Trial of a Timelord remixed for 2015. I originally revisited this music for a flexi-disc on the cover of DWM (Doctor Who Monthly as it was then known) in 1990. (The Terror Version) is new arrangement from the 1990 Doctor Who: Variations On A Theme EP. This remix was originally performed at last year's Chicago TARDIS.

Daleks have "invaded" Newcastle in advance of the forthcoming Doctor Who Spectacular, which visits the city on Thursday 28th May.

The Daleks were seen on the Millennium Bridge over the River Tyne threatening to exterminate passers-by and later up at the Metro Radio Arena where the show is set to appear in the half-term in a fortnight.

The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular, which celebrates the world’s longest running science fiction TV series, showcases the evocative and thrilling music written by Murray Gold for the series since 2005 and features over 100 performers including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and members of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, conducted by Ben Foster. The first ever UK shows will be staged from Saturday 23rd May 2015 to Friday 29th May 2015 during May half-term.

Peter Davison, who portrayed the Fifth Doctor on the BBC One series between 1981 and 1984, acted as presenter for the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular in Australia and New Zealand at the beginning of 2014 and will reprise this role in the UK this year.

The show features a host of the Doctor’s famous adversaries including the iconic Daleks and Cybermen, the spine-chilling Silence and many more fan favourites. The live monsters provide a dramatic contrast to the award-winning and very popular music written by Murray Gold, who has been responsible for composing music for the series over the last eight years, including the record-breaking (and BAFTA award-winning) 50th anniversary episode Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor.

The show also features Murray’s latest score and footage from series 8 of Doctor Who, starring Peter Capaldi, which was one air at the end of last year.

The live music will be accompanied by a big screen presentation of key moments from Doctor Who in specially edited video sequences.

BBC Worldwide North America has announced the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular is coming to New York later this year.

The a live show, which sold out when it premiered in Australia, and is touring the UK this spring, will be staged for the first time in the U.S. at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Wednesday October 7, 2015. The event, produced and presented by Vision Nine, will be one of the headline events of New York Super Week, which takes over the city October 5-11 in the lead-up to the main event New York Comic Con, taking place October 8-11 at the Javits Center.

The show will be hosted by actor Michelle Gomez who portrays Missy, the latest incarnation of the Doctor’s arch-nemesis the Master. She first appeared on-screen in 2014 and returns to Doctor Who in the new season scheduled to air on worldwide this autumn.

I was a big fan of Doctor Who before I joined the cast, and I love Murray Gold’s powerful and emotional soundtracks for the series. This live show has been a big hit with fans of the series in other countries, and I know that Doctor Who fans in North America have been waiting for their turn to see it. I’m so excited to be presenting the first-ever American performances, and to be doing this in the city that has become my home. I can’t wait ’til this fall to see how the amazing U.S. audience reacts to the show being staged in the Big Apple. I’m honored to be a part of it.

The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular, which celebrates the world’s longest running science fiction TV series, features the captivating and award-winning music of Murray Gold who has composed for the series since 2005. The show will feature over 100 musicians and singers under the conducting baton of Ben Foster (conductor, The Theory of Everything).
