BBC Studios have announced that the next instalment in their collection of remastered Blu-ray Doctor Who boxed sets will see the Doctor on trial as Colin Baker's last season is released on 23rd September 2019.

In 1985, Doctor Who was taken off the air for an 18 month hiatus. When it returned, it was with an ambitious fourteen-episode adventure, The Trial of a Time Lord. The epic story saw the Doctor on trial for his life, with the court examining his adventures with companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) and looking to his future escapades with new companion Melanie (Bonnie Langford). This season saw the return of popular villain Sil, along with the Master, the towering robot Drathro and the plant-based Vervoid monsters. With the Inquisitor (Lynda Bellingham) overseeing the proceedings, it was the Valeyard (Michael Jayston) who proved the greatest threat, hiding his own sinister motives for wanting the Doctor’s downfall.

The six disc Blu-ray collection includes all four of the stories comprising this season, features previously available on the original DVD releases, plus a range of new material:

• Terror of the Vervoids - four-part standalone edition with updated effects
• Immersive 5.1 surround sound and isolated scores - on all 14 broadcast episodes*

This summer saw the release of a new film starring Colin Baker as The Narrator.

A Dozen Summers is a comedy, from writer/director Kenton Hall. A story about what it’s really like to be 12 in the 21st century.

The film was released in the summer and Doctor Who News, in association with Kenton Hall, has two copies to give away.

The Worzel Book

A new book about the making of Jon Pertwee's Worzel Gummidge series, has just been released.

The Worzel Book is written by Stuart Manning. It is the story of what Pertwee did after Doctor Who, told through memories from his family and work colleagues, including Bernard Cribbins, Geoffrey Bayldon and Sean Pertwee. The book features more than 40 interviews with cast and crew from the show, over 400 photographs and has a foreword by Mark Gatiss.

When a former Time Lord swapped time and space for the mystery of the countryside, one of children’s television’s most unusual personalities was born. Jon Pertwee’s portrayal of the anarchic scarecrow Worzel Gummidge won him a new generation of viewers and would become his most enduring character.

The Worzel Book traces the journey of Scatterbrook’s scarecrow, from the days of early radio and the novels of Barbara Euphan Todd, through to the hit ITV television series and its eventual resurrection in New Zealand for Worzel Gummidge Down Under.

Is There Life Outside the Box?: An Actor Despairs

Peter Davison's autobiography will be published in the UK on 6th October 2016

The book is now titled Is There Life Outside the Box?: An Actor Despairs and looks at the life and career of the fifth Doctor. It will be published by John Blake Publishing Ltd. The working title for the book was The Fifth(ish) Doctor.

His fans have spoken, but despite their requests, Peter Davison has gone ahead and written his autobiography anyway.

The artist formerly known as Peter Malcolm Gordon Moffett has starred in a number of television series including Love for Lydia, A Very Peculiar Practice, At Home with the Braithwaites and The Last Detective and became a national treasure for having his arm up a cow in his role as Tristan Farnon in All Creatures Great and Small.

He made his first stage appearance with an amateur dramatic company, but The Byfleet Players loss is now the West End's gain as he now has a number of musicals to his name. Most recently he starred in the box office record-breaking Gypsy.

One thing is for sure: of all the British screen and stage actors of the last fifty years, Peter Davison is certainly one of them and, within these pages, intrepid readers will at last have the dubious honour of sharing in his life and times as he despairs over whether there truly ever can be life outside the box.

Colin Baker becomes the 'current' Doctor again on British airwaves today as BBC Radio 4 Extra begin a new run of Big Finish adventures on the radio, Saturdays at 6:00pm (repeated midnight). The Crimes of Thomas Brewster kicks off the run, broadcast in two parts over the next couple of weeks. The story also features Maggie Stables as the sixth Doctor's long-time audio companion Evelyn and guest stars David Troughton as Raymond Gallagher.

This weekend also sees a repeat of the 50th Anniversary programme Who Made Who, which was presented by Tracy Ann Oberman and featured a variety of interviews and special documentaries, plus the mockumentary from 2004, Whatever Happened to Susan Foreman?, which starred Jane Asher as the titular character whose life is examined some years after being left on Earth... The three hour programme follows on after Doctor Who at 7:00pm (and is also on at 9:00am this morning).


Both The Crimes of Thomas Brewster and Who Made Who should be available to listen to over the next 29 days via the BBC iPlayer.

Colin Baker is to visit the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff on Saturday 10th October, and will also take part in a Q&A session:

Colin played the Sixth Doctor from 1984 – 1986 and was an explosion of colours, words and emotions. Passionate, sometimes quick to anger, this was a Doctor you did not want to make enemies with. Baker recently returned to the role and has featured in the Big Finish Productions Audio Drama, The Last Adventure. Colin returns to the Doctor Who Experience after he filmed the Five (ish) Doctors Reboot in 2013 with Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy for the 50th Anniversary, and will be available for photos and signings during the day. Colin Baker is to star in a new horror/comedy feature film by Amber Pictures. Baker's character is described as "an ancient Demon intent on bringing about the apocalypse". The film also stars Suzanne Shaw and Chris R. Wright, with more cast members being announced over the coming months. The film is expected to be released in Autumn/Winter 2016.

On the brink of divorce from his wife Joanna, selfish slob Simon Fisher reluctantly agrees to attend a Halloween supper with his snobby next door neighbours, Phil and Pam. When Simon and Joanna arrive they meet the fifth guest, a mysterious old man. The stranger, is in fact a demon, intent on imprisoning them in the house until midnight, when he will decide which one of them to possess for the next one hundred years. A horror comedy that plays on the prejudices we have for the people next door. Best get to know your neighbours as you may need them some day.

But I worked out that he was in the First World War, in the army, so he has this straight-backed walk and respects the general in the play and respects the copper. Sixth Doctor Colin Baker is set to return to his roots in Manchester to star in a new sci fi thriller being filmed in the city, following the successful funding of the project on Indiegogo

Baker is due to play a virologist in Last Man on Earth - a 20-min pre-apocalypse short film.

Speaking about the project Baker said

The idea and the writing intrigued and excited me. And the idea of going to Manchester to film it excited me even more because that's where I'm from

Joining Baker and the filmmakers on set are several Doctor Who fans who helped fund the film via crowd funding. As part of several perks on offer they will be sharing a scene with Colin Baker in the film.

Director Darren Langlands said

We're hugely excited to have someone of Colin's Sci Fi calibre on board - we can't wait to get started! We're honoured to have some of our contributors join the team on one of our shooting days. These are some of the people who made it all possible. So to have them be on set with us is a real thrill for us too.

The aim was to raise £10,000 for the project. To date over £10,300 has been raised, with the campaign closing on Friday. As well as the chance to appear in the film, a range of perks are available as an incentive to contribute including autographed scripts and t-shirts and a private message from Colin Baker. Each perk also includes a donation to cancer research charities.

A new sci-fi thriller starring Colin Baker is seeking to fund money on Indiegogo to help fund the production. Last Man on Earth is a 20 minute short film which starts filming in Manchester in late July. Just over £200 has been raised within the first day of the campaign launch, with 29 days left to reach their goal of £10,000.

A short synopsis has been posted by the film's producers:

Last Man on Earth is a short pre-apocalypse sci-fi thriller about a virologist who is recruited to a bio research conglomerate to help work on a cure for cancer. It's a film about decisions and their consequences. A story about the future told in the present day.

Baker, who will be playing a "renowned virologist who fronts a bio research conglomerate" said:

Jack Levy and Darren Langlands have written a brilliant script… I’m looking forward to filming it. I hope you enjoy watching it.

Director of the short film Darren Langlands commented:

We're hugely excited to have someone of Colin's Sci Fi calibre on board - we can't wait to get started!

The team behind the film are based in Manchester. Langlands added:

Manchester is such an exciting and vibrant place to be for indie filmmaking at the moment. Collectively, our team has had their films shown at film festivals all over the world. Colin Baker has just completed filming on a new production of A Christmas Carol and Doctor Who News is pleased to reveal an exclusive picture of Baker in the production.

The film, based on the novel by Charles Dickens, is being made Canadian Actor & Filmmaker Anthony D.P. Mann, whose previous productions include Terror of Dracula and Sherlock Holmes and the Shadow Watchers. Baker is narrating the production and will also appear as Dickens throughout the film.

The main photography on the film took place in February to April with Baker recording his contribution, in Niagara, earlier this month.

The film is expected to be released around Christmas 2015, and will initially be available on the production website.

MineCartMayhem has secured interviews with each of the surviving Doctors from the original Doctor Who Series.

MineCartMayhem is run by George, an eleven year old who styles himself as a Mini Matt Smith. George obtained interviews with Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy at EM-CON 2015 in March. Last weekend he completed the set with a interview with Tom Baker at Geek Fest held at Folkestone Academy.

Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor, spoke to Doctor Who News about the current series of Doctor Who and a sequel to The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot at Collectormania 22 last weekend.

Baker attended the event at Stadium:MK on Saturday alongside other Doctor Who cast and cult TV/ film stars.

Asked about Series 8 and contrasts between the Sixth Doctor and the Twelfth Doctor, Baker said:

I’ve seen the first two or three stories, up to the one about who’s under your bed (Listen). The scary story and children one. I’ve recorded all the others but haven’t seen them yet.

I think my Doctor is very similar to Peter Capaldi’s in many ways. Slightly grumpy, not tolerating fools gladly, something else going on in his mind which makes him angry and all those kind of things. I like his spikiness and other people have pointed out that he’s similar to the Sixth Doctor, so maybe every Six Doctors are grumpy!

Baker said about the experience of doing the Five(ish) Doctors.

That was Peter Davison’s idea. He wrote a very good script and he managed to get all those people to take part in it, and the end result is something I’m very proud of, and Peter should be as well for very good reasons. It’s proved enormously popular. We did it for love. Nobody paid us to do it and I gather it’s an extra on Matt Smith’s latest DVD. But everyone has been very complimentary about it. I had great fun doing it.

Baker showed great interest in doing a sequel.

“We’ve agreed we would love to do some more because we three work together very well, but in order to do more, we have to come up with an idea that is as good or better. So time will only tell.

When asked about doing a sequel somewhere else, Baker said:

“Where you base it isn’t as important as the story. It’s the story that matters. Why would Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, because that’s who we are in those stories, why would they want to do something else together? And simply going to Spain doesn’t do it really.

The "alternative" 50th Anniversary special for Doctor Who, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, is to receive an official release on DVD, its co-star Colin Baker revealed at the DWAS convention Myth Makers this afternoon. The actor reported that it would appear on an as-yet unscheduled special set featuring former Doctor Matt Smith.

No other details of what the overall set will comprise are available at present, though it is likely to be released both on DVD and Blu-ray format later this year.


The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot tells the tale of the attempts of 'classic' Doctors Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Peter Davison (who also wrote and directed the piece) to appear in the 50th Anniversary adventure, and their various encounters and mishaps along the way!

An extended video collating three of the Regenerations panels at the Doctor Who Celebration has been uploaded onto the BBC's 50 Years of Doctor Who website.

Recorded at the Excel arena in London on the 22nd and 23rd November and moderated by Nicholas Briggs, the panel brought together former doctors Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy before the celebratory simulcast broadcast of The Day of the Doctor.

Discussed were the series' 2005 revival, the current TARDIS set, an anecdote from Tom about improvising in The Face of Evil, what Doctor each of them would play discounting themselves and the actors' reactions to regeneration scenes. (also available in a separate YouTube video).

In a string of three days from November 22nd to the 24th at the Excel, the event saw fans from across the globe visiting the celebration, alongside cast and crew, in honour of the show as part of the anniversary weekend.

A doodle by Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, is being auctioned for charity as part of National Doodle Day 2014.

The event is to raise money for Epilepsy Action with celebrities donating doodles to be auctioned on ebay.

Other Doctor Who related stars taking part include John Hurt, Bruno Langley; Martin Jarvis; Terry Molloy, Bill Nighy, Felicity Kendal, Honor Blackman, Ian McNeice, Martin Clunes, Maureen Lipman, Roger Lloyd Pack, Nerys Hughes, Imelda Staunton, Sylvia Syms and Sir Derek Jacobi.

A new art portrait of Tom Baker has been released to celebrate the actor's 80th Birthday.

The print, by photographer Oliver McNeil, is for sale as a high quality art print. It joins the range of exclusive portraits of the man who played the fourth Doctor.

Each one is approximately 18 inches by 12 inches and can be purchased framed or unframed in the UK and unframed in the rest of the world. They will be autographed personally by Tom Baker who will personalise each piece of work on request.

Colin Baker is to appear in a new drama, Finding Richard, based on the discovery of the bones of King Richard III in a car park in Leicester in 2012

Baker will play the grandad of a boy who starts his own quest when he hears the story of the recovery. The short film, to be shot on location in Leicestershire, has been co-written by director Rhys Davies and producer Doug Cubin. It is due to be submitted to Cannes Film Festival in early March.

Baker told the Leicester Mercury

I am excited about taking part in this project. I receive many scripts from successful or aspiring filmmakers and am rarely able to participate, unfortunately. However, I'll make no bones about it, when I read Finding Richard, I knew I had to try to find time to play grandad. It's an impressive, gentle and sensitive script, so I have managed to squeeze the time between trips to the USA and New Zealand and am looking forward to joining the team in Leicester.

David Tennant has been filming Gracepoint, the US version of the ITV drama Broadchurch.

The FOX adaptation is being filmed in and around Victoria, Canada, with Tennant playing Emmett Carver, based on the character of Scottish DI Alec Hardy in the UK version of the drama. Filming is taking place in Sidney, Island View Beach and Brentwood Bay.

The 10 episodes will be filmed around the area for approximately four months. A number of pictures are available on Flikr.

The BBC has taken to Twitter to warn people to avoid tweets claiming to be from either Peter Capaldi or Jenna Coleman, as neither actor has a Twitter account. In a tweet sent out from the official Doctor Who account last week, it said:

Doctor Who Official: We can confirm that neither Peter Capaldi or Jenna Coleman have twitter accounts. Don't be fooled by the fakes!

Meanwhile, Coleman has been talking about her life in travel, including her earliest holiday memory (Cornwall) and her favourite destination in Britain (Derbyshire). She says her best holiday was in The Maldives. "I went after finishing series seven of Doctor Who. I had to pinch myself because it was so picturesque. Especially because I'd gone in January, from grey London skies and concrete to all this colour and sea. It took about five days to settle in. We arrived by seaplane and barely saw anyone else the whole time. We did a catamaran trip where the hotel took us out with a picnic and snorkelling gear to a strip of sand in the middle of the ocean and left us there. You couldn't see anything else except the horizon and water. We were totally stranded." Her worst travel experience was "Christmas Eve at London Euston railway station, trying to get home to Blackpool. Everybody turns into animals. Humans stop being humans." Tomorrow's episode of ITV drama Midsomer Murders sees an End of Time reunion of sorts take place, with Bernard Cribbins, Jacqueline King and June Whitfield among the guest cast caught up in the goings-on of The Flying Club, when an airfield owner is murdered. Cribbins plays veteran mechanic Duggie Wingate, Whitfield portrays Molly Darnley, a former Air Transport Auxiliary member with a dark secret, and King is Laura Wilding - the mother of resident pathologist Kate. Chatting about the episode last week, Cribbins said that Whitfield's character would be a love interest for Wingate. The two-hour episode airs from 8pm. [ITV Press Centre]

Paul McGann and Sophie Aldred will be among the star guests at sci-fi convention The SF Ball in Bournemouth later this week. The event takes place from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th February and Aldred, who filmed a number of her Doctor Who stories in the county, spoke of her fond memories of the place. "It was always a delight. I love Dorset and it was great to be filming there," she said, adding: "I remember having a barbecue on the sand at Lulworth Cove. Somebody had managed to wire up lights on an extension cable. We had a disco. Then we would go for walks off along Durdle Door. I remember watching shooting stars one night. It was wonderful." Aldred also said how much she enjoyed meeting the show's fans. "They are incredibly bright people. Doctor Who attracts really brilliant, brainy people," she said. Sylvester McCoy and Karen Gillan join the guests taking part in the Sci-Fi Expo in Irving, Texas, at the weekend. Staying with the Stateside theme, Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall has spoken about David Tennant's American accent in Gracepoint - the US remake of the ITV crime drama. Tennant played Det Insp Alec Hardy in the British original and is portraying Det Emmett Carver in the US version, and Chibnall said of the actor's accent: "I've heard it's fantastic." Meanwhile, Broadchurch co-star Olivia Colman has been talking of the agonies of keeping a tight lid on the plot of the second series after enduring similar tongue-holding for the first one. "Now it’s all starting again, it's awful - there's no end to the secret keeping."

Colin Baker had a jovial dig at the BBC over the gender of the Doctor, saying: "There should [be a female Doctor]. It won't happen because they are too timid but there should be. First female Doctor? Brian Cox is to return as Broughty Ferry burger-seller and failed politican Bob Servant for a second - shorter - TV series of the comedy Bob Servant Independent. Filming begins in May, with Bob and his long-suffering campaign manager Frank (played by Jonathan Watson) left to pick up their lives after a by-election disaster. Cox joked: "Doing Bob Servant was the worst experience of my long career, working with no-hoper talents like [series writer] Neil Forsyth and the rest of them. But these things are sent to try us and occasionally we must fly the flag for the afflicted. One has to be generous at my great age so I am happy to endorse the new series of Bob Servant. For no-hopers they're awffy nice people. I remember when I used to make movies!" The show follows in the footsteps of the Bob Servant books and radio series, with last year's TV series comprising six episodes. Billie Piper caused a stir at the Project Arts Centre in Dublin last week when she dropped by to give her support to friend Ben Power on the opening night of his play A Tender Thing. The actress is filming forthcoming psychosexual horror TV series Penny Dreadful in the area, playing Irish immigrant Brona Croft. Alex Kingston reprises the role of Dinah Lance in an episode of Arrow, the series based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow. And Kingston is being reunited with Sir Kenneth Branagh for a radio production of Antony and Cleopatra. The duo - who are playing the eponymous roles - starred together in Macbeth last year at Manchester International Festival, and Branagh said he was "excited to be reunited with Alex Kingston after our hugely rewarding partnership in Macbeth on stage. Jessica Raine will be appearing as new recruit Det Con Georgia Trotman in the second series of BBC Two's police corruption drama Line of Duty, which starts on Wednesday 12th February at 9pm. Hex is dead. And a distraught Ace holds the Doctor responsible.

She forces him to take a trip to 21st century Liverpool to break the news to Hex's beloved nan and, to pay tribute to Thomas Hector Schofield, the pair seek out his family and friends to tell them of his adventures. They're helped by Private Sally Morgan, who has her own peace to find.

The Doctor, Ace and Sally must each face the fallout of the loss of their friend - to commemorate him, remember him, and finally to move on. But can they do it together, or will their attempts drive them apart?

The second in the Stoyn Trilogy, which tells the story of an abandoned Time Lord from key points in the Doctor’s lives. This time we are directly before The War Games, as the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe find Stoyn on a dying world. With Frazer playing both the Doctor and Jamie, and with Wendy Padbury and Terry Molloy with him, this feels very much like an authentic story from the late 1960s.

This one plays almost like part 15 of The Trial of the Time Lord, as the Sixth Doctor is reunited with the Valeyard and the Inquisitor in the Time Lord courtroom, to unravel some mysteries of the Valeyard’s existence. This one is a very contained drama that allows Colin Baker, Lynda Bellingham and Michael Jayston to fly - and it was wonderful to see them back together again.
